What Materials Can Be Welded with High Frequency Equipment?

High frequency welding technology is widely used across industrial manufacturing, but one of the most common questions from manufacturers is: what materials can actually be welded with high frequency equipment? Understanding material compatibility helps production teams choose the right machine, reduce scrap, and achieve consistent weld quality.

High frequency welding generally refers to two main processes: high frequency dielectric welding, which is used primarily for thermoplastic materials, and high frequency induction heating, which is used for metal joining and heat treatment. Each process works with different material groups.

For high frequency dielectric welding, the material must contain polar molecules. When a high frequency electromagnetic field is applied, these molecules vibrate rapidly and generate heat inside the material, allowing the surfaces to fuse under pressure. Common thermoplastics suitable for this process include PVC, polyurethane, PET, EVA, TPU, and PETG. These materials are frequently used in products such as inflatable structures, medical bags, blister packaging, stationery, automotive interiors, and waterproof membranes.

PVC is one of the most widely welded thermoplastics because of its strong polarity and consistent welding performance. It is equally important to understand which plastics are generally not suitable for high frequency dielectric welding. Non-polar materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene do not respond well to high frequency fields and are typically not recommended for this process. For these materials, other joining methods such as ultrasonic welding, hot air welding, or thermal bonding may be more appropriate.

Coated fabrics and laminated composites are another major category. Materials such as PVC-coated polyester, PU-coated nylon, and TPU film laminates are commonly welded with high frequency equipment. These materials are used in tarpaulins, tents, inflatable boats, liquid storage bladders, medical pressure cuffs, and protective covers. The coating layer provides the weldable surface while the fabric substrate supplies strength and dimensional stability.

Choosing the right high frequency equipment depends on the material type, thickness, production speed, and the shape of the part. A PVC inflatable product requires a dielectric welding machine with appropriate tooling and pressure control, while a metal tube welding line requires an induction heating power supply matched to the workpiece dimensions and material conductivity.
